Can you recommend the top 2–3 relocation companies in Basel?
Yes. The top 3 in Basel are Auris Relocation, Prime Relocation and Welcome Service, in alphabetical order. They are partner agencies we work with directly, whose client work and response times we know. No agency pays for its position; each agency's rating, review count and ReloFinder score (its Google rating weighted by its number of reviews) are in the list below. If you would rather not choose yourself, get matched and we pass your request to one partner agency that fits.
Can I work in Basel and live in Germany or France?
Yes. EU/EFTA nationals who live in Germany or France and work in Basel can obtain a cross-border permit (G) if they return to their home abroad every day or at least once a week; border zones no longer apply. Third-country nationals face stricter rules: a permanent right of residence in the neighbouring country and at least six months’ residence in its border zone. For health insurance, EU/EFTA nationals can usually choose between Switzerland and their country of residence, but must decide within three months of starting work. Tax depends on where you live; see the section on living across the border. Settle all three before you sign a lease.

Is Relocation Basel the same as this page?
No. Relocation Basel (h.o.m.e.s. GmbH) is a relocation agency based in Riehen, and it appears in the ranking on this page with its Google rating and review count, like every other agency. This page is ReloFinder’s comparison of the agencies that work in Basel. ReloFinder is not an agency and does not carry out relocations itself. If you want, we pass your request to one partner agency that fits. Free for you. No agency pays ReloFinder anything.
How can I check whether a Basel rent is fair?
Use the Mietpreisraster, the rent grid the Statistical Office of Basel-Stadt has published four times a year since 1997, prepared for the state conciliation office for rent disputes. It gives the average net rent per m² by quarter, number of rooms, building period and renovation. In August 2026, a renovated 3-room flat from 1961–70 averaged CHF 19 per m² a month in Gundeldingen and CHF 20 in Bachletten. The Federal Supreme Court treats the grid as a rough guide, because it does not capture the exact location or fittings of a flat. Multiply by the floor area and compare with the rent asked.

Does Basel pay for a German course?
Yes, for many newcomers. If you will live in Basel-Stadt long-term and receive a B permit, you can attend a free German course of 80 lessons. You receive the personal voucher at the welcome conversation at the Einwohneramt, and it is valid for the first twelve months after you arrive. Use it early: the landlord, the commune and the school work in German, even when your lab works in English.
