Moving to Zug 2026: Taxes, Housing and Schools

Zug sits between Zurich and Lucerne: a small canton with low tax multipliers, many international employers and very few free flats.

This guide covers the 2026 tax multipliers, the housing market and the schools, with the source of each figure.

1. The 2026 Tax Revolution: Why Zug is Getting Cheaper

For 2026 the canton of Zug lowered its tax multiplier to 78% of the simple tax, from 82%. Each commune adds its own multiplier (Steuerverwaltung des Kantons Zug, 21 January 2026).

Key Changes for 2026:

• Canton: 78% of the simple tax, down from 82%.
• Communes: Baar 47.53% (49% minus a 3% rebate), Walchwil 51%, Zug 52%, Hünenberg, Steinhausen and Unterägeri 53%, Cham, Oberägeri and Risch 54%, Menzingen 55%, Neuheim 59%. Church tax multipliers are separate.
• Your own figure: the bill depends on income, wealth, commune and household. The canton’s tax calculator and the Federal Tax Administration’s give indicative figures.

2. Navigating the Hidden Housing Market

On 1 June 2026, 0.20% of homes in the canton of Zug stood empty, the lowest rate of any canton, against 0.93% across Switzerland (Federal Statistical Office). Some flats change hands without an advert, for example when the outgoing tenant proposes a replacement tenant (Nachmieter).

How to Access the Off-Market

An agency with an office in the canton can watch the market for you, book viewings at short notice and prepare the application landlords ask for: the form, a debt-collection extract where you have one, and your employment contract. No agency can promise a flat.

3. Schools & Integration: The Zug Lifestyle

Zug is small, but families have a choice of international, private and public schools.

• International School of Zug and Luzern (ISZL): Zug Campus in Baar (Early Years to Grade 8) and Riverside Campus in Hünenberg (Grades 9–12). Tuition for 2026–27 runs from CHF 33,200 a year in Grades 1–5 to CHF 39,700 in Grades 11–12, plus CHF 5,000 registration once (ISZL fees).
• Institut Montana Zugerberg: a boarding and day school on the Zugerberg.
• Public schools: children who arrive without German get 8–10 lessons of beginners’ German a week, then at least 2 (Direktion für Bildung und Kultur des Kantons Zug).
